Our Community Impact
in 2021

Jan 26, 2021

At Citi Bike, equity means a transportation system designed to increase access, comfort, and usage of bike share within historically underserved communities. We achieve our equity goals via our Reduced Fare Bike Share membership program presented by Healthfirst, community engagement, building strong, inclusive relationships with the local government, local leaders, advocacy groups, nonprofits, and other community members. Together, we’re creating pathways for Citi Bike to become a valued community resource.

We added Citi Bike stations to socially and economically diverse neighborhoods as COVID-19 continued to affect our local communities, giving more people access at a time when safe transportation was increasingly essential. Our team is committed to caring for our communities and continuing to serve as a resource.

2021 Highlights

  • Reduced Fare Bike Share presented by Healthfirst welcomed over 6,000 new members in 2021, nearly doubling the number of members since 2020.
  • We welcomed a new cohort of partners into a pair of programs, offering funding via Community Grants and free rides to local nonprofits via Partner Codes.
  • Our Community Grants program awarded over $115,000 in funding to local organizations focusing on creating equity through bikes as a vehicle for social change.
  • Our team of neighborhood advocates are deeply embedded in local neighborhoods and speak a combination of four different languages.
  • In partnership with Healthfirst, we provided a first-ride-free initiative to tackle barriers to access.
  • 125 handcycle and tandem rides were taken through our Achilles and Citi Bike Adaptive Cycling Program, making access to bikes readily and regularly available to people with disabilities.
  • From street fairs to adaptive bike rides, we supported 70+ events.

RISE Rides

Through the RISE Project, the Citi Bike team collaborated with community organizations who are doing incredible work in the Bronx and across Brooklyn to build safer and healthier communities. Alongside community members and partners, we rode through neighborhoods to promote peace and safety. Check out our video recap.

Rides with Jaeki Cho

Citi Bike collaborated with Queens local influencer, Jaeki Cho, to organize rides centered around food access and supporting small businesses. Check out our video recap.

We supported rides for first time Citi Bike riders in the Bronx

so they could explore their local community on two wheels.

We supported group rides around Randall’s Island.

Three Citi Bike stations on the island allow riders to experience the views of gardens, urban farms and wetlands.
