Behind every Citi Bike is our hardworking staff
Bike people helping bike people
JANUARY 10, 2023
Since launching in 2013, the Citi Bike program has grown into not only the biggest bikeshare in the country - but one of the biggest in the world. Making sure your ride is smooth from Brooklyn to the Bronx is no small feat. So here’s a peek behind the spokes, if you will.
Bike people helping bike people
The Citi Bike program’s team is made up of close to 1,000 cycle-loving staff, and counting. Together, we service over 1,700 docking stations and keep 27,000 bikes on the road across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Jersey City and Hoboken.
To make that happen, we need to service up to 86,000 bikes every month. Which works out to 2 bikes every minute. The city that never sleeps, never stops riding.
There’s a lot to love about the Citi Bike program
It’s environmentally-friendly
The transportation sector is the #1 source of greenhouse gas emissions in New York State. By getting more people cycling, the Citi Bike program can help us fight climate change. In fact every month, we offset about 3,500,000 pounds of carbon emissions and help keep other pollutants out of the air. We think Greta would be proud.
It’s healthy
Citi Bike riders burn around 196,261,023 calories each month. For the pizza lovers out there, that’s equivalent to over 981,035 New York slices. Even short rides can have positive health benefits and lower stress levels. When your transportation is exercise, you’re winning at every turn.
Not too shabby. Next time you’re in a rush, hop on a Citi Bike and get there sooner (especially if you’re going crosstown).
You make our system go ‘round
Even though it might feel like a public service, Citi Bike is a public-private partnership, and Lyft delivers the Citi Bike program to the City of New York without the use of any taxpayer dollars.
Ridership from beautiful people like you is essential to the Citi Bike community, contributes to our shared vision of making cities more livable, sustainable, and equitable, and helps support the system that gives thousands of New Yorkers and New Jerseyites a ride every day.
